There are art galleries, museums, and concerts. All the things that help you expand your mind and explore the culture. But this weekend I didn’t study the great master pieces, or looking at the artifacts of a lost civilization, or listen to the works of musical geniuses. No, instead I spent an extremely long time in lines, being shoved left and right, and being wacked by tails, staffs, and chainsaws among other odd things (those are just the things I was hit with most often).  Those would be strange objects to be hit with unless you are at the FanExpo. Yeah, I went to the Toronto Nerd-vana, the epicentre of geekness in the T-dot.

I went last year and had a great time; I browsed, shopped, and met some cool people. I even got a drawing of Splinter done by Kevin Eastman, one of the creators of the TMNT. It was awesome.

But this year, this year was a disappointment. I don’t know if what was there wasn’t as impressive or if it was the fact that there wasn’t room to move once inside. There were just so many people it made being there difficult and frustrating. But there was some cool stuff nonetheless.

I am sorry to say I don’t have many pictured to share. I just couldn’t be bothered, it was such a hassle. The place was hot and rammed with bodies that seemed to never stop moving (and when they did it was abrupt and frustrating). I only managed to take a couple (2) pictures the whole time I was there and it was very early on. They had a display for Tron: Legacy that was pretty cool. They had one of the bikes from the movie there plus some concept art.

It was pretty cool and surprisingly the only place that had standing room. From then on the camera swung from my wrist but there was not enough room for me to bring it to my face.

I do regret not taking more pics cuz there were some pretty wicked costumes there. I saw the whole Batman crew, yes The Bat took time out of his busy schedule to show up, storm troopers, Vash the Stampede, Hellboy, Crazy killer no face nurse thing from Silent Hill, Vampires, and randomly half clad girls. Some of the costumes were crap but a lot of them were simply amazing and would have made an awesome addition to the site. Sorry. My bad.

But my friends and I don’t over outwardly show our geekiness, we just use our t-shirts. I wore my, what I call, my “Shatner”. It’s got a line print of Captain Kirk on it. Awesome. My friend wore a cool but simple “Hadoken” shirt. And my other friend wore a top she knitted herself. I am not sure how geeky that is. Anyways, the nerdness in us was present and that is all that is needed. We wondered the place for about 2 hours, very slowly, taking all the sight of the FanExpo. We checked out all the areas, comic book, science fiction, horror, gaming, and anime. There was a lot of cool stuff there but it was mostly hard to check out.

One of my favourite areas of the show is Artist Alley. There are always some really cool people there who are incredibly talented. I met a guy by the name of Marc B. He is a French artist from Quebec who is extremely talented. I talked to him for a bit and bought some art work and a comic from him.

I also met a couple of guys who put out a new comic book called “Heroes of the World”. It is a comic book where there are superheroes based in every country of the world. The main reason why I was even interested was cuz they had Trinidad and Tobago heroes and I got a free poster. It is an interesting idea but I can’t totally expand on it yet cuz I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. But I will let you know.

Sorry I didn’t get any good celebrity sightings. I saw Robert Duncan McNeill aka Tom Paris from Star Trek Voyager and Tobin Bell aka Jigsaw from the Saw movies. I was so disappointed that I totally missed Leonard Nemoy and Bruce Campbell. Even if I didn’t get an autograph I would have wanted just to see them and take a picture.

In the end I came out of there hot, sweating, and a bit frustrated. But I got some comic books, buttons, art, and a wicked cool bust of Worf (he’s my favourite). So it was a good day.

Tra

I like living close to Toronto.
