Tiredness + Laziness = Lateness

So as you can see by the title I know this is late. It shouldn’t have been cuz i watched something I was very excited about but it was Halloween on the weekend. I did a bit of partying, had a couple of late nights in my “non-costume”. (I was dressed as a nerd and most people realized I was actually a nerd but I was wearing glasses, aka 3D glassed with the lenses popped out, so it should totally count. So what if the Space invaders t-shirt and the World of Warcraft t-shirt belonged to me and I know who “Axe Cop” is. It was still a costume.)

I also met this douchey very pretentious guy who everyone thought was dressed up like Will.I.Am but upon talking to him he wasn’t dressed up at all. He is apparently a “cyber-goth”. But he looked very much like this

With a hat.

Foolishly i continued to talk to him and was told, in the snootiest of manners, that he was not even wearing a costume because that is how he always dressed pointing out his lace hobo-gloves, fancy boots, and his rather cool flippy hat. He was also wearing goggles which I mentioned were very steam-punk and he was clearly astonished that a lowly person like myself would know about something so far above my level. Needless to say i didn’t talk to him for very long.

Besides that rather uncomfortable encounter with a man who was quite attractive until he opened his mouth the parties were great. Lots of awesome costumes that included Axe-Cop, a robot, ghouls, and I even bumped into a double-rainbow.

Sadly, because of all the fun I was having and the fact that only Saw 3D came out, I didn’t make it to the movies. But there was something just as awesomely cinematic on the small screen that made its premiere on the weekend. I am talking about “The Walking Dead”.

The show is based on the amazing comic series of the same name about Rick Grimes and his fight to survive in a world over run by zombies.

When I talk/write about the show I feel like I am being redundant. I come up with the same words and thoughts as when i was reading the book. This bodes very well for the show but doesn’t make for good reading. The show has the same feel of the comics except in colour, sort of; there is this muted tone and over all darkness that gives it that old, dirty world feel. There is a heaviness to it, like you also have the weight of this terrible world on your back. There is also no score to the show. The quietness of it with the sounds of birds, wind rustling through the trees, and the distant sound of dragging limbs adds to the shows intensity.

The cast so far is great. The episode was mainly Rick Grimes played by Andrew Lincoln. He did an amazing job looking distraught, frightened and bewildered. There was nothing boring about watching him walk through empty streets or body filled parking lots as he tries to find anyone that can help him. We are also introduced to Morgan Jones played by Lennie James. He is trapped in an undead infested town with his son unable to move forward after the death of his wife. These are both new characters stuck in to fill in an area that was glossed over in the books, Rick’s initial survival before he hits the road. They don’t come across as cheesy or melodramatic or an add on. In the short span we are with them they are whole characters that you feel for. There is also a very brief meeting with Shane (Jon Bernthal), Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), Carl (Chandler Riggs), and a few people from the eventual group. From the little we have seen of them they all seem to fit the roles.

The costumes, make-up, and effects in the show are pretty good. The zombies do look ghoulish and festering as they await to feed on someones flesh. I would definitely run away if this

or this

Or this

was coming after me. They do look a little dry though. Literally dry. In the books they had this very drippy, oozy look to them. Blood splatter is a small problem though.  There were a number of close ups of the undead losing their minds either by gun shot or bat. It had a very obvious post-production-effect look to it. But because the rest of the show is so good this can easily be over looked, it is tv after all.

There are 11 trades in “The Walking Dead” comic series and this first episode went to about half way through the first book. So that is about 22 episodes. I thought this was supposed to be a mini-series but this may go into a couple of seasons. There are already a few diversions from the book so I am really looking forward to seeing the show unravel. It won’t be a complete mystery but there will definitely be some surprises.

You should totally see “The Walking Dead” (Sunday 10pm on AMC), so far it is smart, interesting, well written and beautifully directed. I really hope they manage to keep it up.
