An Evening with …

I have been working on this piece since Sunday. Why? Because this week I was not writing a movie review. The movie I saw on Friday was Push and it was a complete waste of time, talent, and a great concept. The way the film was put together was sloppy and incredibly boring. The movie wasn’t long but the way the film flowed it seemed like forever. So I really couldn’t be bothered to sit and try to write a full review of something that was already a waste of time. But what I could tell you about was what I did the next day. I spent an evening with Kevin Smith.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I went to see the show. I am not particularly interested in movies outside of the movie itself. I know who is in it, who directed it, the story line and so on but I am not a star crazed person. But Kevin Smith always seemed like an interesting person. I am not sure exactly what I was expecting but it wasn’t what I thought it was going to be.

The problem is that everyway I think of writing this Kevin Smith comes off looking like some sort of sexual deviant and that is not what I want to say. The man is funny, articulate and yes a little strange but you would get that if you have seen any of his films. I wasn’t expecting the show to be as long as it was. I was thinking it would be like a concert, an hour and a half, but he was up on stage for a full three hours. He was joined on stage by Jason Mewes for most of the night and his wife and Mewes’ wife periodically.

That guy can talk a lot of shit, literally. He talked about himself taking a dump and breaking a toilet, his wife’s constipation, the guys in Jackass, and in Zack and Miri. These were long drawn out stories that were hilariously inappropriate. He also has a couple other pre-occupations; (There isn’t a better word for it) dick (not just his own), homo-sexuality, and the Gretzky’s. I know it is a strange combination of things but that is what went on at the show.

I learned many things about Mr. Smith. He is a sex icon in the “Bear” community. He apparently was in a spread in a magazine and is really proud of it. He has been spending a lot of time sitting around smoking pot to relax himself and it has made him fat. Or should I say fatter. He is incredibly disappointed in how bad Zack and Miri Make a Porno did in the box office. (So am I actually cuz it is a great movie). And he is getting started on his next flick, a horror movie that I can’t remember the name of right now.

Throughout the whole show he interjected comments and praise for the Gretzky’s. He had been watching Hockey: A People’s History and he just really got into the whole thing. He was especially awed by Walter Gretzky’s fatherly wisdom. He was happy to be able to talk about them in the show because he can’t do it in the States. They just can’t appreciate it as much as a Canadian crowd can. But he got so into it that at one point he apologized to crowd for talking about the Gretzky’s so much but he just couldn’t help himself.

All I can say is I had a good time. It was fun, hilarious, and a relatively light show. I recommend you see him if he comes to town and think of a good question to ask (I couldn’t think of one and if I didn’t I probably wouldn’t have been brave enough to get up and ask). Every show is different so every experience will be different but I believe you will have a good time no matter which show you go to. But if you don’t what to go to the show you can buy the DVD. That way you can go to the bathroom without missing anything.
