2 out of 3 ain’t bad

So on Wednesday I know I was complaining about being sick but not too sick. Well that was then. Not to long after posting that my condition rapidly deteriorated. I left work early, got drugged up and passed out for about 15 hours. Good times. I then got up, my whole body was aching called into work and said I wasn’t coming in and passed out once more. After 5 more hours it seemed like my body was ready to be awake even though it was still not well. I decided this was a good time to catch up on some movies I never got around to seeing. I got my ass out of bed and onto the couch and wrapped myself in my comforter and pressed play. On the line up were RockNRolla, Happy-go-lucky and Kabluey.

RockNRolla

This was a good one to start off my viewing. It was crazy, violent and funny, just the stuff to get the blood pumping. Guy Richie is back on his game with this movie. Like Lock Stock and Snatch it is one of those overly complicated British gangster movies where a whole lot of crap happens. And once you get past the accents and understand what is being said it is well worth the look. Richie knows how to create a mood and maintain the feel through out the film.

There are some relatively big names in this movie. Gerard Butler who is almost painfully hot in this movie (It burns in a good way). Thandie Newton has a pretty face but really doesn’t do anything besides purse her lips all the time. Tom Wilkinson playin’ the bad ass boss. Jeremy Piven doin’ his same ole same ole. And Ludacris who seems out of his league here. But the supporting cast is also amazing with the scarily efficient Mark Strong who teaches you how to slap properly. Idris Elba who is a hilarious side kick. Tom Hardy who has managed to be in quite a few things but hasn’t gained much notoriety. And the intense Toby Kebbell.

It isn’t his best film so if you haven’t seen Lock Stock and Snatch don’t start with this one but it is far from his worst. It is a hell of a lot better than the one full length movie he did when he was Mr. Madonna, Swept Away. And if you are a fan of Richie’s then you will be happy that he is back in form. I hope we don’t have to wait too long before he comes out with something else.

Happy-Go-Lucky

Yeah, no. I was told this was a good movie. It was nominated for best original screen play at the Oscars. I read numerous reviews that this was a good film. No. You all lied to me. I am used to the Oscars doing that but you all the indie bloggers and my friends that have lied to me, for shame. There is no point to this movie. It is boring. Nothing happens. Then it ends.

I didn’t like the main character Poppy. I just wanted to smack her (This is where Mark Strong’s lesson would have been useful). There is a difference between an adult being childish and an adult acting like a child. I am childish. She acted like a child. There wasn’t anything I found endearing or cute or playful about her. She just seemed like one of those people who insisted on stepping on a person’s every last nerve. The only person who seemed to do anything in this movie was Scott played powerfully by Eddie Marsan. He was weird, creepy, and crazy all wrapped up in one. He was good at it too.

But this movie is a definite skip. If you want something that will put you to sleep go for it you won’t be missing much.

Kabluey

Ah Kabluey. I didn’t know what to expect when I was watching this and I have to say I am incredibly impressed. This movie is well scripted and acted, has beautiful and surreal cinematography, and has one of the funniest sequences I have seen in a long time.

It’s about a guy who is a complete loser. He likes to laminate things a bit too much. Gets fired from is job and then goes to help his sister-in-law with her 2 kids so she can go back to work. And that about sums it up. It doesn’t sound like much but what they do with this little premise is great.

The main character Salman, played by Scott Prendergast, is just so likeable. He just kinda goes through life doing his own thing however he thinks it should be done. It hasn’t gotten him far but he lives with it. His sister-in-law Leslie is played my Lisa Kudrow. She does a great job as a tired mother trying to keep her family together without going insane. And those 2 kids, played by Cameron Wofford and Landon Henninger, are just great.

I definitely recommend sitting down and watching this one. You will laugh until you cry at parts and it leaves you feeling good at the end. Also watch through the credits, there is this little animated thing they do with this awesome song that I can’t remember the name of right now. Check it out.

So those are the movies that got me through my sickness for the most part and at least I was entertained.
