Boom Boom Blah

After the crazy sad week that was last week I was ready to go out and have some fun. I needed to see shit blow up. I went to see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. I know it wasn’t the best movie to cheer myself up but I just couldn’t say no to explosions and fighting robots. I knew it wasn’t going to be very good and I was right.

The movie falls flat on its face. It is so big and so grand that it just can’t hold itself up. Michael Bay is known for his sweeping shots, massive sets and spectacular explosions but he always forgets about the story. No matter how many effects are there or how cool it looks without a story the movie cannot work.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen takes place 2 years after the first film ends. It opens with a horribly lame voiceover that flatly tells what has happened to this point. The military and the Autobots have created an alliance to find and capture/destroy the remaining Decepticons that are on Earth. Sam is on his way to college, Mikaela is still skanky (it’s not her fault she is being portrayed by Megan Fox), and Bumble Bee is still hanging around. The rest of the story is so convoluted and messed up that there is no point getting into it. There is something about a caveman battle with Decepticons, some old Autobot, the spark, a shard and stuff. There is also some crazy Terminator-esque Decepticon that is just creepy.

The action in the movie is good. Unlike the first movie you can actually tell what is going on when the robots are fighting. It no longer looks like a mass of metal debris and sparks flying all over the place. They also introduced new Autobots and Decpticons into the story. It was good to see different types of robots. And for some reason there are the “twins” Mudflat and Skids who remind me a lot of Marlon and Shawn Wayans which is not a good thing.

The biggest problem with the movie is that when the action stops the story stalls. I don’t particularly care about the human counterparts in the whole thing. Yeah they are necessary because it takes place on Earth but otherwise if they were removed it probably would have been a better film. They were really just there for comic relief and 90% of that was so lame that it simply made me sigh. There were a couple of “dramatic” scenes that were so soap-opera that it should have been left for daytime TV. Marlena and John have more drama in their pinky fingers than all these people put together (If you know what I am talking about shame on you. Actually, shame on me).

Overall I was bored with movie. I can’t really recommend it because the action wasn’t enough to overshadow the bad script and lack-luster acting. It was cool to see the Autobots and Decepticons fight for the Earth on the big screen but all the other stuff you have to sit through just isn’t worth it.
