Fancy Show

Yesterday I accomplished nothing. I started doing about 5 things (including writing a post) and for some reason, a distraction or change of mind or whatever, I didn’t finish anything. I was so frustrated with my day. I know I don’t have much to do and it is annoying when I finally get something to do I can’t do it. But today is a new day, I will pick up where I left off or possibly start over and get things done and I am starting with a post. I know it is late but yesterday I was going to talk about the Oscars (winners, losers, and fashion) and Alice in Wonderland and I still am.

I don’t usually watch award shows, they are boring, gaudy, and never give the award to who deserves it. But my mother was watching and after the 5th time she called me to look at something on the red carpet pre-show I just sat and stayed. I have to say the show was a bit subdued, there was the usual glitter and moving sets but it was very minimalistic. It looked nice, not excessive.

NPH’s opening song was alright, witty and fun, without over doing it. I was disappointed with Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. It wasn’t their performances it was that their humour wasn’t really utilized except for the somewhat mediocre opening. The show pretty much went off without a hitch except for that lady who Kanyed (yes it is now a verb) Music by Prudence producer Roger Ross Williams (best short documentary winner).

One other great faux pas that happened in the show, which I am sad to say I didn’t get immediately cuz throughout most of it I kept going “Oh yeah…” followed by sad face, was that during the “In Memoriam” part of the ceremony they forgot about Farrah Fawcett and Bea Arthur. I think it is a travesty and a huge oversight by the academy. They were well known big stars that deserved to be recognized.

The show was boring as expected. My mind wondered many a time and I think I fell asleep at one point. There were no high points and no particularly low points. The whole show was on pretty much the same level, blah. Sandra Bullock winning was a shock but I can’t really say anything about that because I didn’t see The Blind Side but all I could think at the time was “Her? Really?” And I was very confused why they had the Twilight tards and Miley Cyrus presenting awards. Just because you are in a movie doesn’t make you an actor. I think it was an attempt by the academy to get the young people to watch the award show. And Tyler Perry…ugh.

I am glad that Avatar did not win as many awards as expected because it didn’t deserve it. People have been blinded by how pretty the movie is and forgot that the movie lacks substance. I mean its alright. I watched The Hurt Locker only hours before the awards started and it really is a fantastic movie. The acting, the plot, the cinematography, all of it came together to tell an amazing story. It does deserve all its awards.

Now the fashion. I was disappointed for the most part. The dresses weren’t particularly stellar. Like the show many seemed to have toned down the lavishness of the event. But a few of the dresses should be noted. Like her Oscar win I was shocked at how beautiful Sandra Bullock looked in her Marchesa dress. Usually she looks nice but rarely more than that but that dress was absolutely stunning. Queen Latifah also looked elegant in Badgely Mischka. The simplicity of the dress with embellishments in just the right places made her look work. Elizabeth Banks’ Versace dress was amazing. The fitted beautifully detailed bodice blended into the soft flowing skirt was lovely. Even though Cory insists that Maggie Gyllenhaal’s dress looks like it was made from a Hawaiian Shirt I really liked it. It fit her perfectly, the colour brought out her eyes and didn’t wash her out, and the unconventional-ness of the pattern matched her career and personality.

There were also some ugly and ridiculous dresses that made me wonder if they looked at themselves in the mirror before they left the house. They following people should either fire their stylists or slap themselves cuz…damn. Sarah Jessica Parker wore Chanel Couture and that means nothing. She is supposed to be a “fashion icon”, whatever, this look is far from iconic and I don’t know what she was thinking. Vera Farmiga wore Marchesa. Apparently this designer does really bad dresses as well as really good ones. I think this dress would have worked if the fan thing stayed in the skirt. But it just kept going and made the dress just extra and not in a good way. Charlize Theron in her Christian Dior Couture rose boob dress. If it wasn’t for that stupid detail it may have worked, it would have been a simple but classic gown. And I am not sure what to say about Diane Kruger’s Chanel dress. The ruffles, the pleating, the black fringe that cut her body into pieces was just all kinds of wrong.

Then there were the men. I found many of them looked unkempt; shaggy hair, unshaven, and untidy some were even orange. That list sadly included Ryan Reynolds who spent too much time tanning, Sam Worthington who thought it unnecessary to shave, Quentin Tarantino who is just a man that can’t look clean (He was there with Diane Kruger, an all around bad looking couple), and Antonio Banderas who looks scary with all that facial hair.

Some of the gents made the tuxes look good. I don’t like the guy but Tom Ford (the smug bastard) looked good, Robert Downey Jr looked great with his blue bowtie and comfy foot wear, Lenny Kravitz came out of the wood works looking hotter than ever, and Jeremy Renner cleans up very very well.

My Oscar coverage turned out to be more expansive than I expected. I may have to leave my review of Alice in Wonderland for another time. It may be up later today actually. I am just glad I have actually finished something today.
