I made it to the movies this weekend. YEAH! I actually wasn’t sure I would. I had a birthday party to go to on Friday night. We went out to a bar, ate, had a few drinks, then…karaoke. KARAOKE! And this is not a room with just your friends, no this is a large bar that you have to get up in front of people and sing. Now for me to do that I have to have a few drinks in me to muster up the courage. Because I was wearing this tee
Printed to look like Michael Jackson’s famous red leather jacket I sang “Beat it”. I totally showed them how funky and how strong is my fight with the inclusion of some serious air guitar action. But then I sobered up and couldn’t bring myself to do another song. My friends were very into it and kept going.
Then on Saturday I got trapped at a 9 year old’s birthday party. It was fun for about 2 minutes, then really boring, I got cake which made it fun again, and then I got bored once more. It isn’t the kid’s fault or anything I surprisingly have nothing to say to a bunch of kids or their parents (who talk about their kids). But I did have fun earlier in the day shopping for his present. Who can be upset while perusing toy stores? At first I had no idea what to buy him but I settled on getting him a model he can build. The store I was at had some really lame ones so as I was heading out the door something sparkly and colourful caught my eye. A wall of Barbies! I know, I know I am such a (5 year old) girl. But I actually don’t buy them very often because the ones I usually see are oh so lame. But these were beautiful collectors items with a few lame ones too. I spent a good half an hour just going though the magnificent dolls. And I bought one.
Isn’t she pretty? She is supposed to be Mrs. Claus at a ball or something. Simply awesome sauce. Anyways, getting back to the kid’s gift. I ended up getting him a Gundam kit and a Pez dispenser. I almost bought a Gundam for myself but I remembered my previous purchase so that will have to wait til my next paycheck. BTW I am also surprised that most people I know don’t know what a Gundam Figure is. I keep having to dumb it down and say Robot but that doesn’t do it justice.
Anyways, after escaping the joyous jubilation of a juvenile it was still early enough for me to take in a flick. I finally got to see Megamind.
Megamind, a supervillain, has finally bested his archnemesis Metro Man. They have been at odds with one another since they were both blasted from their home planets before its destruction. Now that he has won he finds himself free to do whatever he wants unopposed. He is evil and he is running rampant in the streets with his minion. But soon this becomes boring with no one to banter or evade. He comes up with a plan to create a superhero so he will have someone to battle. He soon realizes that this is a bad idea.
Even though I had been totally excited to see this movie I almost didn’t. Not because of all the stuff listed above but because of a comment made by a co-worker. Usually this would not phase me but I do hold his opinion in esteem. We seem to have a similar taste and interest in movies and I have had many discussions with him on the topic. He mentioned seeing Megamind and being utterly bored with it. I was thrown aback, stunned, my world shattered by this. When I reached the theatre I actually contemplated not seeing it afraid that I would be disappointed. I am glad I still saw it.
I have to say i understand his view. It is not that the movie is bad but there are quite a few slow paced sequences. I did find my mind wondering at points just waiting for something to happen but it did manage to keep pulling me back in. This movie isn’t as quick as some of the other animated features out there but it does the trick. I found that the good parts out weighed the bad making it an all around good experience.
The characters were great. They are all beautifully designed, coloured, and articulated. It is a really wonderful style of animation to look at. They were all voiced by some great talent; Will Farrell was Megamind, Tina Fey was Roxanne Richie, Jonah Hill was Tighten (That is what IMDB says but I thought it was “Titan”), Brad Pitt was Metro Man and the unsung star Minion was voiced by David Cross. Minion was a scene stealer throughout the movie. He is strange to look at, a fish in a bowl atop a mechanized gorilla body, and he has some of the best lines in the movie.
The script is good, a lot of witty banter and such. One thing I found thoroughly entertaining was Megamind’s random mispronunciation of words. I have no idea why it was so funny to me. Like speeider for spider, or meh-trocity instead of Metro City and my absolute favourite that had me laughing like crazy meh-lonk-olee. It took me like 5 minutes to get it because he says it so fluidly like it is the correct way to say it. Did you get it yet? Melancholy.
There are also a few visual gags that I found entertaining. There was the Jor-El-esque character the mentors Tighten and then there is the original Donkey Kong reference. There were angled levels, jumping and rolling barrels.
Megamind is a great movie and it should be seen. I don’t think you have to see it in 3D, even though I did, I don’t think it was utilized enough to warrant the extra few bucks but go a head if you like it still looks good. I am just not a big fan of 3D in general.

Gundam and barbie, really ?! No wonder you are alone. in other news, Megamind is hilarious but not hitting the mark as much as an animated movie is supposed to and I think thats why it didnt really create any particular ripples in that genre. Brad Pitt is decidedly not funny and not needed in the flick. Another movie where Imax is kind of unnecessary? the new HP movie – i know you dont care, but seeing how i sat through reading about you “jizzing” all over barbie wall, you can care for 5 seconds about HP. I SAID 5 SECONDS !!!!
