Mo

No, not “Please sir, can I have some mo.” And not “That isn’t metro, its mo.” More like “What’s that on your lip?” “Its a mo.”

Mo as in Mo-stache (Yeah I know it is “technically” spelled wrong but go with me on this). Moustache (spelled right this time) is defined as an unshaven growth of hair on the upper lip. That combined with November, defined as the eleventh month of the year, you have Moustache November better known as Movember.

Movember is a movement that started in 2004 in Australia. It is guys growing moustaches for the 30 days of November to raise awareness and funds for Prostate cancer where “the moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health”. This has grown from 432 “Mo Bros” to well over 250,000 (that includes some “Mo Sistas” apparently) worldwide raising millions of dollars.

There are many people in my office participating in the event. I think it is a noble cause; what they are doing is great…

And hilarious!

I can’t help but giggle and sometimes downright laugh at some of these people. They usually come in clean shaven and the sudden appearance of this follicle discharge across the lip on the upper mouthal region is jarring and strange.

But the thing that gets me the most is that it conjures up an image of the evil twin.

I know Flexo wasn’t the evil twin but it still goes with my point.

I feel bad about laughing at people that are doing something for a good cause. You would think, upon seeing theirs, I would think about notable ‘staches like the ones belonging to Tom Selleck, Burt Reynolds, Vincent Price, or Billy D Williams. But with those dusty lips, unruly hairs, or the fact that they have been honed into shapes not meant for their features it makes me laugh.

There are a lot of Painter’s Brush, quite a few large Pyramidal, but the one that gets me that there seems to be the most of are the Horseshoe. I have no idea why. I think they feel cool. But really it makes them look very 1970s pornstar-ish.

Does that make me horrible? I hope not.

But it is a good cause and I hope people keep participating and donating. They just have to own it, walk with pride and swagger and ignore me laughing in the corner.
