Guilty Pleasures – Movie Edition

I love movies and for me there is no real guilty pleasure in watching a movie that I like. But I have to say when I admit to watching and liking some of these I am ridiculed by some of my “friends”. But I didn’t go to the movies this week and I had to get my fill of some cinematic glory. I was thumbing through my vast collect of films when I realized I kept stopping on some pretty hilariously bad but entertaining films. I only managed to have the time to watch one of them but it was great.

Adventures in Babysitting

I don’t care what anybody says. This is a great movie. I am entertained and laugh from beginning to end. It is like The Goonies but it takes place in the city. Their adventure is a night out and their treasure is their friend. There’s a giant rat, a stabbing, and suburban kids singing the blues.

Many people in this movie have fallen into obscurity but there are some pretty notable names. There is Elizabeth Shue in her first major leading role and I have to say she does a pretty good job. A young, incredibly fit, and golden locked Vincent D’Onofrio makes a short but poignant appearance as Dawson the mechanic or shall I say Thor. There’s also an indie movie regular Anthony Rapp. And a TV favourite Bradley Whitford who looks exactly the same then as he does now.

The Chronicles of Riddick

So this is a movie about a shiny eyed interstellar fugitive that is pulled into saving the universe from the Necromongers who want to enslave all its races and their leader wants to take them into the UnderVerse. I think that about sums it up. Sounds awesome right? I know. What? There are great fight scenes, stuff blows up, and some incredible over acting by Thandie Newton. What’s not to like? And they managed to get some class into this movie with Dame Judi Dench. And any movie where someone can say, “He is not a man. He’s the holy Half-Dead who has seen the UnderVerse.” With a straight face then I am all for it.

And here is another favourite…

Monster Squad

Either you know this movie or you don’t. It is not one of those “I think I have heard of it” movies. I don’t know why but there are huge circles of people that have never heard of this movie and people who have don’t seem to fraternize with people who haven’t. It’s crazy. But really I think you should check it out.

The movie is about a group of kids, let’s call them a squad, who have an interest in scary humanoid beings, let’s call them monsters. So they are the Monster Squad. But then real monsters come to life. They have to save the day from Dracula, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, The Gill Man, and Frankenstein with the help of an old German guy and Van Helsing.

Masters of the Universe

Remember He-Man? You know the defender of Eternia? He is Prince Adam who wields a magic sword given to him by the Sorceress and he is also the twin brother of She-ra. Well they made a live action movie.

The cheese in this movie is so delicious and its filled with some well known actors. Dolph Lundgren plays He-man and he runs around the whole movie in his underwear and a cape. Frank Langella plays the villain Skeletor who scowls through the whole thing. A very young Courtney Cox, Robert Duncan McNeil, yes Mr Tom Paris himself, and James Tolkan is in there too. It’s great stuff.

This list is probably a whole lot longer but that is all the time I have for now. Pick one and indulge in its cheesy goodness.
