Finally

So you know how I was complaining that I wasted my money going to see the new Street Fighter movie? Well I went out to see another movie this weekend. I finally got to see Coraline.

I have to say I was impressed and at the same time under-whelmed by the whole thing. I don’t know if it was because there was too much hype, my exceedingly high level of expectation or the fact that some girl was kept picking up her cell phone through the whole thing and wouldn’t shut up (I am not going to complain that is for another post). But still, as I watched the movie there was just something missing.

The movie was visually stunning. From the opening credits the movie had a feel to it. A strangeness that made you want to see more. The characters themselves were beautiful and unique. Each one had a personality before they spoke. Their clothes, posture and movement said something about each one. It made them into real people that you had an interest in.

The sets were just amazing. The colours and textures that were used created atmosphere. Each scene was meticulously put together to create something that was simply brilliant. The animators were able to create an eerie feel while maintaining a child like whimsy.

But even with all of that the movie still felt flat. It hurts my heart to say it, but it is true. The movie is quiet. I think it was done purposefully to create a tension but not far into the movie the silence itself becomes a bit of a distraction. And the film can be a bit slow at times but at least it doesn’t stop.

I do recommend seeing this movie. It is worth being seen on the big screen if only because of how beautiful it is. I don’t regret seeing it, it is still a good film. But I think I was just expecting more but I am not sure what that “more” would have entailed.
