Long Weekend

I almost forgot to write a post today cuz it is a holiday. When I am home all these things that help me keep a schedule just fall to the waist side. Getting up late and lounging is what is keeping me happy today. But I was just surfing the net clicking here and there and then I remember it’s Monday and a post is needed. So in honour of this holiday here is some info on Victoria day and Queen Victoria.

Today is Victoria Day or as some call it “May two-four” which celebrates Queen Victoria’s birthday.

She was born on May 24th 1819 and the holiday is celebrated on the last Monday no later than that date. So next year the holiday will fall on her actual birthday.

Victoria Day has been celebrated in Canada since 1953 and has fallen on her actual birthday only 6 times.

She became queen in 1837 and her reign lasted until her death on January 22 1901. She sat upon the throne for 63 years and 7 months which is longer than any other British monarch that came before her or since.

During her reign the British empire grew to become the global power at the time. The reach of the kingdom went to all ends of the earth including Canada, Australia and Africa.

A number of places have been named after her. In Canada there is Victoria BC and Regina SK; in Australia Queensland and Victoria; in Africa the is Victoria Lake and Victoria Falls.

Queen Victoria was married to Prince Albert, her first cousin. In nobility is was not uncommon to marry within the family to ensure that blood lines stayed noble.

They had 9 children together in which Victoria arranged all of their marriages. She also arranged the marriages of all her 42 grandchildren which tied all of Europe together. This gave her the nickname “the grandmother of Europe.”

Well that is about it. I know there is a whole lot more but on a lovely day like today who wants to spend so much time in front of the computer?
