Apparently my first post of the week is going to be on Tuesdays now. I just can never fit it in on Mondays anymore. Yeah, Mondays are generally busier but I was managing before and now I don’t seem to get the chance. Oh well. I will try to get back on the Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule.
Anyways, this weekend I didn’t get to the movies. GASP! I seriously missed it. I was jonesing all weekend for my celluloid fix like some addict. The kicker is a movie I really wanted to see came out. The Hangover looks awesome. There has been a lot of hype surrounding the movie but from the titles of reviews I have seen it may actually be a good movie. (I hate reading whole reviews before I see a movie unless I am on the fence about it) I hope I get to see it this weekend or else I may die. That and Up. I did manage to fit in another movie though. I didn’t see it on the big screen but it did calm my jitters a bit. I watched Fanboys.
I was excited and a little weary to see it. Fanboys was originally supposed to be released in 2007 but after a number of set backs it was continually delayed. There were money problems, then it wasn’t received well by test audiences because there was a sad undertone, it was recut, re-edited, parts were reshot, script changes and after all of that it wasn’t even released in theatres. It ended up going straight to DVD and you know that is a bad sign. But you know what? It wasn’t half bad.
The movie takes place in 1998 a few months before Star Wars: Episode I – A Phantom Menace came out. Four Star Wars uber geeks set out on a mission to break into Skywalker Ranch, steal a copy of the movie, and watch it before one of them dies of cancer (that is the sad part).
Their journey takes them across the US where they battle Trekkies, do a striptease for gay bikers, go on a peyote trip, get thrown in jail, encounter a couple of escorts, and have their Star Wars knowledge tested. It is a typical road trip movie with geekery stamped all over it. They also manage to set an almost nostalgic tone to the movie with the music they chose to use; the days of Chumbawamba just come rushing back.
Fanboys is far from being a great movie. I am not sure if this is because of the changes that were made or if this was the original vision. When the story slows down it gets boring fast, there are some very lame scenes, and the acting isn’t the greatest but there is something in the overall movie that makes me root for it. It has a fun light story, some genuinely funny stuff, and a lot of great cameos. They managed to get Billy D Williams, Carrie Fisher, Seth Rogen, William Shatner, Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes and more.
Don’t run out and see this movie but if you come across it I say give it a chance. Fanboys is easy, the kind of movie you watch when you want to relax, there is no thinking involved. But I think when it is over you will walk away from it amused and thinking “That was nice.â€
