How to Lose Friends and Alienate People is a funny movie. It’s not hilarious and not a bore it is an average comedy. The laughs are pretty evenly spaced with ok performances by everyone involved.
Simon Pegg is a great comedic actor but he comes across the best in works that he has more to do with than just the acting ie. Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, and his tv show Spaced. He did help write Run, Fat Boy, Run but we won’t talk about that one. Maybe in writing he understands the character better and it helps him emote but in movies like this he seems to be a little half hearted at times.
His ensemble cast includes Megan Fox, who seems to be bringing “stripper chic†to the norm. Gillian Anderson, who I was shocked to see, does an ok job. There is also Kristen Dunst who continues through her acting career half asleep. And Jeff Bridges is really entertaining.
Now besides the mediocre acting, there is a serious pacing problem with the film. The first 3/4 of the film goes along pretty well, then there is a montage, and then it is the end of the film. I really think they should have evened it out a bit. I felt like I missed something in there.
Overall the film is a “you’ve seen all the other good comedies†rental. It will satisfy your need for a laugh but you will just shrug at the end of it.
