Every once in a while I think it is good to do something a little different, something outside of your regular scope of activities. It helps you grow and increases the number of stories you have to tell. Yesterday I did something I have never done before. It was fun, odd, and surreal. I took part in the 7th Annual Toronto Zombie Walk.
Now I am not the kind of person who usually partakes in public strangeness. Well I don’t think comic/sci-fi/anime conventions count cuz they take place indoors and I do not dress up for those. And my friend says that this kind of thing is totally up my alley since I (apparently) attract attention on a regular basis (whatever). I had to disagree with that one but I digress. But walking down the street on a gloomy but nice Saturday afternoon in autumn with blood dripping down my face in a mass of people groaning and snarling is just different.
I have to say that when my friend first told me about this I was kinda iffy about the whole thing. I hemmed and hawed at the facebook invite. Then she actually called me and talked me into it. It is an experience. And I said why not. It is not like I will be walking by myself looking zombified.
I was surprised how many people were there and how into it they were. I really don’t know why. I mean it has been happening for 7 years now and like anything a person can be into why can’t they be into zombies? I don’t think I was zombie enough. I just had a wound on my face and my shirt was ripped and my hoodie was a little dirty. I even came up with a story for myself to cover for my lacklustre zombification, I was a new zombie.
I was hiding out with my friends when we were attacked. There was a scuffle and I got dirty and my shirt ripped. I got separated from the group and one of my friends was wildly swinging a bat to take out zombies and thought I was one as I was trying to catch up. They hit me in the head killing me instantly. Then I woke up a zombie and that is why I wasn’t as messed as some people. You have to understand the zombie to be the zombie.
Some people were decaying, their flesh falling off, blood flowing out of their mouths, chewing on limbs, and gashes all over their body. Some of them had fun with the whole zombie thing. There were zombie Ghostbusters, zombie Mr T, zombie Red Shirts (Star Trek people for the non-geeks), zombie Little Red Ridinghood, and even a Zombie Pimp. Some people made it a family affair. Parents with their kids had a theme. One family was dressed in their Sunday best and then all zombied up. It was pretty good but I didn’t get a pic of them. People even got their dogs involved which I thought was awesome.
The walk was more of a leasurly shuffle throughout the city. It was a meandering escapade from Trinity Bellwoods Park all the way to the Bloor Cinema. Zombies don’t walk in a straight line so we went across Dundas through Kensington Market across College and up Borden. It all took like an hour and a half because of the pace we were going.
I had fun. I think I would do it again as long as I had people to go with. I would even try harder next time, really get messed up. May be even try some brains. BRRRRAAAAAIIINNNSSSS!
